Swimming Opportunities For The Kids

Kettering Council offers free swimming sessions for teenagers. The programme is possible thanks to over £90,000 from the Government. The main aim is to reduce obesity among children and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Previously, being awarded over £50,000, the local authority offered free swimming for over 60s.

If the schemes goes ahead both age groups will be able to take free swimming sessions from April 2009 to March 2011. Also modernisations are planned in the swimming pool.

It’s a mixture of swimming, diving and dancing. Sue Acampora is a YMCA swimming teacher. She trains a tiny group of three enthusiasts: a teenager and two ladies. When Sue held a free introductory class for the first time, she met lots of young girls who thought synchronized swimming is like gymnastics and dancing in the water with somewhere to stand.

SWIMMING: Verdon sets British record

A 13-year-old Matthew Verdon of Warrington Swimming Club set a British record time during the ASA North West Regional Age Group Championships. He swam the 100m backstroke in 1min 1.71secs. The previous record had been set in December 2005 and was 1min 1.91secs.

In the group of 14-year-olds, Tim Almond broke his personal record in 100 metres breaststroke in 1min 8.84secs and won gold.
