London Sailing

Sailing will be part of this year London Youth Games after five years of absence. Guy Malpas and Steve Mitchell from RYA have been working hard to bring this sport back to the games.

“There is very little opportunity in London for young sailors to race against other, so what better opportunity to pitch their skills and get a taste for competitive sailing than at London’s largest youth sporting event and what will prove to be the largest youth sailing regatta,” Guy said.

A Fractional Sailing

New Sailing Speed Record

Pascal Bidegorry and Yvan Ravussin on 60ft Trimaran Banque Populaire set a new sailing speed record. They sailed 667nm on just one day! (13th to 14th November 2007) The average speed was 27.8kts.

Sailing Safety

When preparing for your sailing adventure you should consider some ideas to be safe. These are very simple and basic, therefore often ignored.

First of all, evaluate skill levels of all participants. Consider the level of experience, age, strenght and understanding of first aid. Most situations, such a scraps and abrasions, can easily be handled but others take more judgement and knowledge. It’s essential to think clearly and to have good judgement in the situations that may arise.

City Set For Lite Youth Sailing Event

More than 500 Britain’s most talented young sailors are coming to Plymouth today for the National Youth Regatta. The event has been organised by Youth Sailing Club at the Mount Batten and will last until Friday, 27.

It will be the largest regattas ever seen in Plymouth.

Some of the young sailors at Plymouth are expected to represent Britain at the 2012 London Olympics.

Sailing: Britain’s girls collect first gold

Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson are the three girls who took Britain’s first gold medal at the World Championships of sailing.

It wasn’t easy, though. After falling off their Yngling, Wilson had to scramble back on board and their closest rival, Shirley Robertson, with whom the two Sarahs won gold in Athens, was forced to take a penalty which ended any chance of toppling her former crew.

“Every weekend I go sailing at Lake Bowmoor” - says Ollie. He loves it but admits it’s not the easiest sport to learn.

He sails a small, one-person boat, called Optimist.

Sailing is a sport for children aged 7 to 15 years old.

“Every Sunday we have club racing. I came first twice last weekend which I was really proud of” - Ollie says.

250 boats take part in the Inland Championships. The top sailors then go on to represent Britain at the World Championships. And Ollie hopes to represent Britain one day.

Plain-sailing for teacher

Michael Whitmarsh, a technology teacher at the prestigious Bolton School, guided his pupils to build a 40ft yacht. It was just a part of a 7-year classroom project. Mr Whitmarsh wanted his students not only to learn about sailing but also to to have a chance to have a real-life tests.
