When Natasha Fernandopulle was about to try kitesurfing for the first time, she expected something like surfing with the help of a kite. And indeed, this is what it was all about.

Kitesurfing and kiteboarding are apparently the quickest growing water sports in the world.

Kitesurfing is composed of: windsurfing, wakeboarding and power kite flying. It’s not sure whether the sport was invented in France or Hawaii. Kitesurfing in Hawaii developed very fast because of the fantastic weather conditions and good wind. Also in the UK the sport is very well known. The large L shaped kites can be seen along many British coastlines.

Westward Ho! is hosting kite surfing and buggying event this weekend. This is said to be one of the best locations for wind and waves. The British Kite Surfing Association Wavemasters Competition comes for this three-day event, from Friday, 25 to Sunday, 27. A part of the beach will be closed for the competition.

Kitesurfing Event For Youngsters

Fleetwood beach hosted a special kitesurfing event for five lucky teenagers. British Kite Surfing Association run the training camp for young people involved in that activity and who show talent in the sport.

“The conditions at Fleetwood are perfect because of the natural geography and the wind directions. Kitesurfing is definitely a growing sport and there are some talented youngsters in the North West. British champion Aaron Hadlow is great role model and inspiration to others in the sport” said chairman of the BKSA, Richard Gowers.

If the wind is right, kitesurfing can be “an extreme sports junkie’s dream catchall”. But to catch good wind you need to spend a lot of time monitoring the weather and wind reports. The ideal wind speed for kitesurfing is between 15 and 25 knots.

But in order to start this exciting sport, you’ll need some equipment.
1. You’ll need a kite. They are available in two forms: inflantable and foil kites, and in various sizes (from 7 square meters to 21 square meters). The larger the surface area, the more power the kite has.
