In the late 1990s rollerblading was a hyper-popular activity. But even today, about 13 million people in the world rollerblade for fun and a fast workout. It’s a fantastic way to burn ample calories and tone your muscles.

“Skating makes you feel like you’re just floating. It’s such a great way to lift your moods while getting in some awesome exercise,” says Kalinda Bogue, director of marketing at Rollerblade.

This is so different from other activities. “There are charming and attractive things about it that can’t be found in other sports” says a junior engineering student, Chanida Sananpanichakul.

Archery doesn’t make you that much fit as tennis or running but it makes you more relaxed, calms you down and helps you aim at a target.

London Marathon

Some facts about this weekend’s event.

The politician, Matthew Parris, holds the record for the fastest MP to complete the Marathon. In 1985 he ran 26 miles in 2 hours and 32 minutes.

The runners will travel a longer distance than the longest bus route in London. The bus from Croydon to Heathrow goes for 23.75 miles.

68 ambulances, 950 portable toilets, 710.000 bottles of water, 500 stretchers and 20,900 metres of barriers - all those are waiting for this year’s runners and spectators.

Cycling

Cycling is a great way to stay fit and healthy. The best thing in this activity is that it can be done all year round (we wrote about snow-biking in one of the previous blogs).

There are many types of bikes, though, like electric bikes or e-bikes. Although they do all pedaling for you (or maybe because of that), they are very popular. “The number of electric bicycles sold doubled in 2007 from 20,000 to 40,000,” said Siegfried Neuberg of the Bicycle Industry Association in Bad Soden, Germany. “The trend will continue in 2008.”

Brits love computer games. But they also like to be fit. Now it is possible to combine those two activities. Nintendo is launching a new game, Wii Fit, on 25 April. The games include traditional sports as well as less conventional ways of keeping fit such as yoga, balancing, aerobic exercises, muscle conditioning and much more.

March 29 was the day of Mt. Peter’s annual Spring Rally. The weather was beautiful and there was plenty of snow even though the temperature was 37 degrees! What’s more, the ski area was full of ice water from an adjacent pond fed by mountain streams.

Extreme Ironing

A group of 72 Australian scuba divers took their ironing boards, irons and some linen into the deep water near Melbourne. They were trying to break the world record for ironing under water.

The new activity’s website www.extremeironing.com decsribes it as “latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt.”

Cycling Anniversary

The Cycling Club A5 Rangers in Towcester will celebrate its 60th anniversary in December. But the Club will organize cycling and social activities for the whole year round as well as racing from April to September.

Everyone can come, join the Club and have a go. Open evenings take place every Friday in Watling Street, at the clubhouse in Towcester. Trials will usually take place on Wednesday evenings. On Saturdays, there will be a possibility of taking part in off-road rides.

The Year Of Adventure

The Lake District is a place where the outdoor events season started on March 15. Hundreds of activities, such as rafting, climbing, Nordic walking, biking and canoeing, will take place in the area. The event will finish with a Boxing Day walk.
