Water-Sports Week

The first week of May (3-11th) marks The First National Windsurfing Week in the UK. The events will take place across the country and all watersports fans are welcome.

The 5th May will be a Windsurfing Family Day. The event is free and has been organized by staff at watersports Topmark, in Barrow. It will be possible to buy or sell windsurfing items, take parts in the races and try stand-up paddle surfing. The new activity is about standing on a surf board with a single-bladed paddle.

Shark-Safe Wetsuits?

Surfers hitting the waves in some areas of the world are afraid of sharks’ attacks. There have been cases of the attacks where surfers lost their lives or lost some parts of their body.

Is that because the sharks think those black creatures are seals? The question is: do wetuits need to be black or other dark colours? That seems to be the mainly reason of sharks’ aggression!

Cycle Up The Hills

Cycling is, with no doubts, one of the best ways of keeping fit. It may also be a way of enjoying fresh air and save gas. Especially now, when spring days are longer and warmer.

Craig Undem, a cycling coach, advises to cycle in the hills. The workout is great and doing it twice a week will help you to burn lots of calories and build strong muscles.

Skateboarding - Some Facts

Skateboarding has been known from about 1920s. At the beginning skateboards were just roller skates attached to a wooden board. The first wheels were made from steel so were very noisy and didn’t turn. Not until 1972 the urethane wheels were invented making the ride much smoother and faster. Also the boards looked different: it started being made from maple plywood.

Kite Surfing Event

Westward Ho! is hosting kite surfing and buggying event this weekend. This is said to be one of the best locations for wind and waves. The British Kite Surfing Association Wavemasters Competition comes for this three-day event, from Friday, 25 to Sunday, 27. A part of the beach will be closed for the competition.

Healthy Holidays

Brits are more and more aware of the fact that healthy lifestyle means being active. The Association of Independent Tour Operators states that sporting holidays organised all over the country are very popular.

Apparently people realise that lack of activity and bad nutritional habits can lead to health problems such as strokes and heart attacks. “We don’t necessarily wish to sit on a beach sunning ourselves for 14 days in the 21st century. We have specialists offering holidays including golf and tennis, canoeing, cycling, walking, sailing and much, much more,” says chairman of the association, Derek Moore.

Cycling Challenge

Mrs Loughborough, 64, and Mrs Brant, 63, are sisters who will try to complete a coast-tocoast cycling challenge. After Pat Craven, 66, who completed the course in 193 days, Mrs Loughborough and Mrs Brant will be the second and the third oldest ladies, if successful.

Val Loughborough was diagnosed with leukaemia three years ago and she needed a strong motivation after chemotherapy. Both sisters hope to complete 135 miles in one week. Their aim is also to raise money for Leukaemia Research and the haematology unit at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

Cycling Town Status

10 towns in the country will be awarded of the status of the Cycling Town. Their representatives will be invited for interviews at the end of May. What criteria need to be met? Obviously the towns must have secure facilities for cycling such as cyclepaths, crossing and parking facilities.

One of the towns that could get the award is Grantham. If the town is successful, it will get funds up to £10 per inhabitant.
