Teaching Kids Canoeing

Canoeing is a very healthy activity. It’s a great way of keeping you fit, stay outdoors and spend time with your kids. That’s the way of showing them how to spend free time doing something good and exciting.
The Public Assembly and Recreation in Shreveport, U. S., came up with the idea of teaching youngsters the basics of canoeing and kayaking. About 14 children learned the basics of those sports, as well as how to put a life jacket on and how to get in and out of a canoe. The first lesson taught the kids everything they needed to start the new activity.
“We’ve been working with SPAR for about six months now,” said Adam Willard, canoe and kayak chairman. “This gets youths involved in a sport that is fun and family friendly. We see so much bad stuff on the news. A lot of kids are going down the wrong road. We want to give them something fun to do instead of getting involved in violence.”
The children who participated in the lessons were delighted.
“It’s been wonderful,” said DeMarcus Mariland, 14. “We wanted to try something new. We’ll probably keep doing it.
