No Skis Required

Marc Donahue is a Monticello resident and owner of Lafayette Mower Repair on Earl Avenue. His hobby is water skiing only that he does not use the skis! It’s even more than a hobby as he takes part in competitions and won one gold medal and two silver medals from the Blairfoot Bananza Tournament earlier this month.
Mark does not even stop practicing in the cold weather. He trains three to four times a week. When it is really cold, he practices slightly less but he trains for the whole year round.
“As long as the lake isn’t completely frozen over and there is an opening in the water, we’ll go.” - says Mark.
How did this hobby start for him? As he says, his friend Fred Deiser, has been doing barefoot skiing since he was little and Mark liked it looked. Then Fred taught Mark how to barefoot water ski.
“He picked it up right away. He’s really learned a lot in a short time,” said Deiser. “Next thing I knew he bought a house on the lake because he liked it so much.”
Donahue is truly dedicated to the sport. It gave him the first place in the Men’s II Division (31- to 45-year-olds) in figure 8, second place in endurance, and third overall in the open competition. He plans to take part in other tournaments as well.
