Paragliding - Continued

Friday, September 7th, 2007

As promissed, here’s some more info about paragliding.

We already know what equipment is needed, how to control the glider and the types of flying. Now it’s time to find out how to launch and land.

Both actions are done into wind. In low winds, the wing is inflated with a ‘forward launch’, where the pilot runs forward so that the air pressure generated by the forward movement inflates the wing. In higher winds, a ‘reverse launch’ is used. The pilot faces the wing to bring it up into a flying position, then turns under the wing to complete the launch.

Paragliding - An Exciting Experience

It’s a recreational and competitive flying sport. A paraglider is a free-flying, foot-launched aircraft where the pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing. Its shape is is formed by the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing.

Underneath the wing the pilot is supported from a web of lines. The lines are then attached to strap-like risers that are attached to the pilot’s harness. To control the speed and to turn, the pilot holds controls in his hands.

Borja Ponte and Julen Rementería are two Basque students working on a project to develop recyclable material for the production of surfboards.

About 750,000 surf boards are beeing produced each year but only a small number of them is made of sustainable or bio-degradable materials. For this reason TXFOAM project is aiming to develop and produce new ecologic foam, no toxic and recyclable, for its use in surf industry.
