Canoe Polo

Have you ever tried canoe polo? All you need to do is to grab a few friends with canoes and find some water.

There are two groups in this game, each should contain of five players and the object is to get the ball into the opponent’s goal to score goals. The team scoring the most goals in a set time is the winner. It is a combination of water polo, basketball and kayaking.

This game can be played for recreation but can also be a serious sport. It has World Championships every two years.

All you need to do while playing is to pass the ball from hand to hand among other players, use of the paddles on the ball is also allowed. The rule says that you can’t hold the ball for more than five seconds. You can “dribble” the ball by throwing it out of reach or sideways into the water. Be aware of the penalties you can get. They include goal- and sideline throws, free shots, goal penalty shots and green, yellow or red cards.

Canoe polo can be played both in a swimming pool and outdoors. The “field” should measure 35 meters by 23 meters. The edges can be marked by the sides of the pool or by a floating ropes.

Don’t forget about the referees. There should be one on each side-line and they are on foot rather than in boats. You’ll also need a scorekeeper, a timekeeper and two line judges.

The goals measure 1 by 1.5 meters and they are suspended 2 meters above the water. The goalie defends the goal with his paddle by sticking it up vertically.

The game usually consists of two 10-minute halves and the teams swap ends at half-time.
