Sailing Safety

When preparing for your sailing adventure you should consider some ideas to be safe. These are very simple and basic, therefore often ignored.
First of all, evaluate skill levels of all participants. Consider the level of experience, age, strenght and understanding of first aid. Most situations, such a scraps and abrasions, can easily be handled but others take more judgement and knowledge. It’s essential to think clearly and to have good judgement in the situations that may arise.
Another thing to remember on a sailing vessel is life preserver. Everyone should wear it, especially children. You should be always prepared for unexpected taht may occur. Life preserver can save your life if you fall from the boat and hit your head. Don’t forget that the jacket has to fit for the individual needs. And if it’s the right size, comfortable, and in your preferred style, it wil be worn more easily.
What more do you need? Sailing shoes! Sailing involves of course lots of water. Sailing shoes will give feet grip on a wet deck and help with balance, control and walking around. A simple slip can cause a twisted ankle, bruises or pulled muscles which not only makes sailing uncomfortable, but might cut a trip early.
Don’t forget the first aid kit! You may need anti-biotic ointment, paint medicine, bandages and at least basic knowledge of first aid care. And because in some emergency situations we don’t think clearly, you may also need instructions or directions. Having information at hand will help handle the situation quickly and correctly.
Wind and sun can damage your skin, so remember to bring sunscreen and wear proper clothes that protect you and help against these conditions. Apply sunscreen thirty minutes before sun exposure and every hour or so while outside. Always protect your skin, even on a cloudy day because a sunburn can occur even then.
And have fun!
