BMX riding explained

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Bicycle Motorcross, BMX, which began in the 1970’s, has gone through numerous changes. Now there are five main disciplines of this sport. They split into two sections: racing (one discipline) and freestyle (four).

While BMX racing is quite obvious, the freestyle needs a bit of explanation.

1) Street riding - is about finding everyday obstacles and doing tricks on or over them. At the beginning, the street bikes were very heavy. Later, they were built like tanks. Although they didn’t break, it was almost impossible to do anything on them.

Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson are the three girls who took Britain’s first gold medal at the World Championships of sailing.

Water Skiing - A Family Sport

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Grant Weick started water-skiing when he was just 18 months old. Now he’d 20 and, as he says, he pushes himself to try and find new feats to dive into.

“It’s about just getting out there and trying new acts,” says Weick. “Everytime I try something new, I don’t always get it on the first try. Even if I did, I can’t just move on to the next trick. I have to take time to get it right. We’ve got to put on a show for anyone who wants to see us. They want to see something new. People watching us — that’s what really drives us to do what we do at our best.”

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

It’s summer (no matter the weather!). And having a good pair of sunglasses is essential on sunny days not only for walking but aslo when playing sport.

Glasses that absorb between 75 and 85 per cent of sunlight are sufficient when playing on grass or tarmac in normal conditions.

But for water sports you’ll need darker sunglasses. Ophthalmologists recommend those with absorption rate of between 80 and 95 per cent.

For the past 10 days the boat has been holed up in Holyhead in west Wales sheltering from gales.
