Canoeing To Work?

Are you bored by traditional ways of going to work? Why don’t you try something new and really exciting. Why not canoe to work?

Brett Governanti, an American, likes new challenges. At the beginning, he rode his bicycle from Mills (Wyoming), where he lives, to get to work to Casper. But one day he felt like trying something else. Encouraged by the City’s Coordinators, he canoed with his co-worker, Danielle Armstrong.

“It was a great ride until we ran into some snags by the rapids and flipped over,” he said. “We hit a rock and that was it.”

When their canoe took on water, Armstrong quit and continued her journey on a dry land. But Governanti dumped the water out and paddled on.

He got to work wet but on time! Then he chained his canoe to the bike rack.

“I will definitely try it again, maybe in a different vessel,” he said. “The height of water at the rapids can make a canoe take on lot of water. I just need more practice. I know I can beat them.”

The City Manager, Tom Forslund, challenged all departament heads to use alternative methods of transport. The aim was to show the motorists their commute from the eyes of pedestrians and bicyclists. People were asked to share their experience and fill out a survey.

“We are hoping people will provide input to us on the challenges you face in getting around community and help us identify areas where we need to make improvements”.

In many towns and cities, there are places accessible just by cars. This causes that cyclists and pedestrians feel terrified of accessing certain areas and prefer to go miles out to avoid them.

The idea of leaving cars and motorcycles in the garage aimed to change this situation. Unfortunately, the city does not currently have any codes regarding canoe traffic.

Governanti said, he was so excited the night before canoeing, that he could barely sleep.

The city held a lunch for people who participated and held a drawing for prizes.

Governanti won a free car wash.

Sounds like a great and funny idea? Tommorow, instead of the usual walk, I’m taking my rollerblades. Just because I don’t have a canoe…
