International Surfing Day

The whole world celebrates the International Surfing Day today, on June 21. The aim is to raise awarness of the state of our oceans and beaches and help protect and preserve these areas. And to give thanks to Mother Nature.
“This is our day to celebrate the spirit and joy of surfing,” says Surfrider Foundation Executive Director Jim Moriarty. “International Surfing Day is also an opportunity for us to give back to the oceans, waves and beaches that bring so much into our lives.”
The events will take place across the globe; including Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, France, United Kingdom, Japan and elsewhere. They include beach clean-ups, surf clinics, paddle outs, chapter meetings held on the beach, organized games of horseshoe and beach volleyball, international food fests, live music performances, yoga sessions, and beach barbecues.
“We hit the surf everyday, but an event like this is a good opportunity for the kids,” says Rob Nixon, a volunteer coordinator.
Children from 8 to 14 will participate in the clinics, which will include presentations about the ocean and basic instruction on how to ride waves. Students will learn about waves, water safety and surfboard instruction.
The Foundation encourages the participants to bring their own swimwear and sunscreen for the day’s activities but will provide surfboards, water, lunch and a T-shirts for all participants.
Have fun!
