RollerJam on UK TV

Friday, September 29th, 2006

We had a strangely ecstatic email recently, alerting us that Challenge TV will be showing Roller Derby (going by the name of RollerJam) at 7pm on weeknights, from October 2nd.

We tried to find a little information on the upcoming show on the Challenge TV website, but there was none to be found. In fact, we’ve never heard of Challenge TV, so we’ll just have to leave you all to work out how to pick it up! If any of you find the channel and catch the show, let us know what you think.

O’Neill’s H3 Campack

After watching all those cool snowboarding documentaries you get free with your copy of White Lines, or whatever mag takes your fancy, I’m sure many of you have launched yourselves off a slope or rail holding a video camera in one hand. Trying to eliminate the crazed arm-waving in order to get a steady picture almost always results in you capturing some incredibly boring snowboarding… or a lot of falling down. I personally have lots of video of the latter, on varieties or boards and wheels. It’s interesting the first time, and after that the yelp and skiff of snow as the camera goes flying starts to get old.

The UK’s Defficiency in Roller Sports

I’ve been reading quite a bit about a real revival in Roller Derby in america recently - a sport that i can imagine alot of you first-time skaters finding a horrific idea. Not only do you have to learn to skate (on quads), but when you skate you have to compete against a team of elbow-shoving competitive fellow racers, who will do all they can to overtake you (or wipe you out, by the sounds of it!). It’s almost ice-hockey without the puck or stick… or speed skating with a sense of aggression.

Summer Snowboarding

You can say one thing for the Americans - they don’t let a little weather get in the way. In 85-degree heat yesterday they donned their snowboarding gear, got on helmets and gloves, and defied the summer. Luckily though, to save them looking subsequently quite stupid on a beach in full boarding gear, they were attending Boardfest’s Snowboard Rail Jam in Orange County.
Nearly 17 tonnes of man-made snow created the 75 foot long ramp, and the women involved competed for a thousand dollar cash prize.
